Fall is a good time to think about soil samples

As summer gardens are winding down, now through early fall is the time to take soil samples to check soil pH and nutrient levels.

Soil pH is a measure of acidity and alkalinity on a scale of 0-14 with 7 being neutral. A pH value below 7 becomes more acid, above 7 becomes more alkaline.

Most garden vegetables optimum pH range is 5.8 to 6.3. As the soil pH gets further from this range, either lower or higher, gardens will become less productive and limit the ability of vegetables to uptake nutrients.

Why should I sample this time of year? One of the most common problems in home gardens in Richland Parish is low pH. This is corrected with lime which needs the fall and winter months to react with the soil and increase pH to optimum levels.

Gardens with high soil pH are corrected with aluminum sulfate or sulfur. Soil sample results will also indicate any nutrient problems that can also be corrected.

Samples should be taken 4-6 inches deep at several locations in the garden to get a representative sample.

Collect these samples in a bucket and mix well. Bring one pint of soil to the Extension office where it will be sent to the soils lab.

The fee for a routine soil sample is $10.00 with results usually returning in 10 working days. The County Agent will help interpret and advise on needed soil amendments.

For more information contact your local Extension Office at 728-3216 or at 702 Madeline St. in Rayville. Visit our website at www.lsuagcenter.com\richland.
