A routine traffic stop resulted in a drug arrest this week when Rayville Police Department Officer Jessie Morris pulled a GMC Yukon over for not having a license plate light.
Morris was advising the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle of the reason for the stop when he observed a grinder used for separating marijuana seeds from leaves sitting on the upper console of the vehicle. The driver gave Morris permission to search the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle yielded no drugs, but Morris said he could still smell a strong odor coming from the vehicle. K-9 Officer Phillip Chowns was then called to the scene to search the car. The juvenile then pulled a green Grizzly snuff can from his crotch area when he saw Chowns prepping the dog. Morris opened the can to discover a small amount of a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana in a baggie in the can.
The juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana (Schedule I) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Rayville Police Chief Willie Robinson commented that he would like to commend Officer Morris for his handling of the case.
“Thanks to Officer Morris’ diligence in monitoring traffic, we were able to take some illegal drugs off the street,” the chief said.
He advised that persons intent on being involved in drug activity should be aware that he and his officers will find them and put a stop to that activity.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy for drug activity or any other crime that endangers the safety of our citizens,” he said.
